From our swimming instructor to wrap up National Drowning Prevention Week.Hello everyone! My name is Caitlyn Knight and this year will be by 10th and final year of teaching swimming lessons at Hitchcock bay! I started taking swimming lessons here in 2008 when I was five years old. Believe it or not, i was once the student in the freezing cold water complaining about having to do my time swim. Our family had a rule growing up that if you wanted to have fun at the lake you had to know how to swim in it, which meant taking lessons no matter how cold the water was. For eighteen years I have spent two weeks of my life at Hitchcock bay main beach; I’ve taken more trips to the deep dock than anyone could count! Since 2016, I have went from a 13 year old in grade eight to a 23 year old with a nursing degree, all of which I owe to this job. It is here where I learned the importance of hard work and warm layers, where I found my passion for first aid and helping those who need it. I want to thank all of the students over the years who came out and gave it their all even if it was the last thing they wanted to do with their summer, I want to thank the parents for dragging their kids to the beach on cold, foggy, rainy days; sitting in bunnyhugs and blankets as they watch from the shore. I have meant it every year on Friday’s when I say “it’s not about getting the badge it’s about becoming stronger and better swimmers”. Knowing how to swim will not only save your life, it may save others. Knowing how to safely perform a resuce, how to provide basic first aid, and how to call for help are essential skills that we teach within the lifesaving society program. I understand the disappointment your kids feel when they don’t have a badge in their report card at the end of the week, I understand the confusion when something that seems so unimportant in regards to knowing how to swim is holding your child back from the next level. Everything we teach has a reason; turning over from your front to your back float ensures your child can protect their airway if they ever fall in the water face first, a solmersalt ensures your child can safely return to the surface of the water after a disorientating roll, swimming out to the deep dock and jumping off without a aid or lifejacket ensures your kid can return to safety in deep water. Not only does repeating levels prepare for when you do move up a level, it ensures you kid is a competent, safe swimmer. The days where it is cold and the water is rough aren’t ideal to swim in, but those are the days you need to know how to swim for. As we come to the end of National Drowning Prevention week, I thought it important to share. The leg between tuffs bay and Gardiner dam of Lake definbaker have no quick response teams for water rescue. Plan for the worst, hope for the best; take your kids to swimming lessons, take yourself to swimming lessons, always wear a lifejacket, always swim with a buddy who can help you if you get into trouble, check your boats safety equipment, stay hydrated and stay cool, keep drugs and alcohol away from the water especially if you are going in it or on it. There is a reason there are lifeguards at the Olympics and that’s because even the best swimmers can find themselves in a dangerous situation when it comes to the water. Your life jacket is a seatbelt, you cannot put it on while the accident is happening. Thank you for the last ten years, I wish you all a fun and safe summer!
Big shout out to the person or persons who helped themselves to a hill of topsoil that was behind our shop! This was bought, delivered and paid for to plant grass at our cabin. Hey Hitchcock bay it is my honour to put out a small water park out in lake for everyone to use. I am in no way trying to make money with it but would like to recover some cost. If you would please put 5 dollars per child per day in the provided Locked box it would be much appreciated. If I can recover some cost I am more than willing to add to park which will be a water slide for next year. I hope to do this but it will all depend on covering some of my cost.
